Today was the first day of the first week of Camp!
Old and new friends and colleagues came together to brush off the cherished Grace Art Camp tune and be entertained by a very old makura, or “pillow story” to set the stage for the week, entitled Under the Cherry Blossom Tree, a favorite ancient rakugo, or “joke tale” about a grumpy old man who ends up turning inside out into a fish pond! All the color groups sampled 6 different studios and spent the day getting to know each other. For the rest of the week we will hear a daily installment of this week’s story The Luck of the Sea and the Luck of the Mountain, a very old Shinto creation myth of promise and trust between two siblings who each long for the luck of the other. Ja Mata!
