Tales from the CARIBBEAN
June 28 – August 13, 2010
Seven Weeks of Island fun at Grace Art Camp!

Grace Art Camp 2010 will be dedicated to the people of the Caribbean nation of Haiti as they rebuild their lives in the wake of the
devastating earthquake on January 12.
It all begins with a story...
Stories hold the imaginations of the cultures of the world, and each year Grace Art Camp places story at the heart and inspiration of its curriculum. Your week at Grace Art Camp provides an opportunity to be immersed in story, culture, and art. Children from ages 4 to 12 may select one week-long session in which to creatively explore new skills and ideas through dance, drama, visual arts, book arts, ceramics, glass, and fibre arts. New studios in storytelling and Caribbean Music will join the always-popular tee-shirt studio. Camp hours are 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
All studios are led by professional artists. The camp’s supportive, process-oriented environment nurtures creativity and builds community. Throughout the week everyone is encouraged to put into practice the Art Camp values of being respectful, responsible, resourceful, and receptive. This summer, celebrating its 14th year, our urban day camp is offering seven weeks of camp with tales from the culturally rich countries of The Caribbean.

MORE ABOUT GRACE ART CAMP
Your Child’s Day at Grace Art Camp
Every morning campers gather in their peer-grade color groups for sign-in and assembly. There is a snack during morning studio, and approximately an hour-long lunch/recess break midday. Each afternoon, campers meet again in their color groups for sign out. Each day concludes with an afternoon assembly with campers sharing examples from each studio.
Monday begins with a presentation of the Story of the week. For the remainder of the day, campers rotate through each art studio with their color group.
Tuesday through Friday, following the daily story installment, artists present the day’s studio activity choices – all designed to capture campers’ imagination and free their creative ideas about the story. Color counselors help campers choose one morning and one afternoon studio.
On Friday evenings, the week ends with a group celebration showcasing the campers’ beautiful art and efforts!
Extended Hours
Grace Art Camp offers Extended Hours from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm each day. Cost for Extended Hours is $85 for the week.
A Special Word about POD
POD, originally named for the “whale group” in one of our very first Grace Art Camps, is specially designed for children in preschool – who have not yet been to all-day kindergarten. (It is also appropriate for children in kindergarten whose needs better match the POD program.) POD has a home base room, a pace that is a little bit slower, and more – but slightly shorter – projects that better meet their developmental needs. POD remains together all day and experiences all studios of the camp in groups. They also are introduced to the choosing process and spend part of each day in quiet time and individual pursuits. POD has counselors who have both experience and a special affinity for young children.
Color Groups
Approximately 150 campers attend Grace Art Camp each week. Children are initially divided into seven different grade-peer groups, including the preschool group, POD. (Notification will be sent in June.) We call them color groups, but grades and colors vary by week. depending on enrollment. (Please note that any friend requests must be in the same grade.) For children who have friends in different grades, it is important to note that color groups remain together only for Monday’s orientation schedule and for sign-in and sign-out. For Lunch, Recess and Studio Time children often join friends or siblings. Each color group has two counselors and a counselor-in-training, who accompany color groups on Mondays and assist in studios as needed.
Scholarship Application Process
Financial assistance is available to families with demonstrated need. Due to the number of requests most awards are for partial scholarships. Applicants pay a $30 fee and complete the new on-line registration process; they also must complete the (downloadable) paper form, provide copies of the required documentation and mail the Scholarship Application to Grace Art Camp at 1535 NE 17th Avenue, Portland, OR 97232. Awards will be made in mid-May.
Policies and Waivers
As part of the application process, parent or guardians will be asked to agree to the following waivers and policies:
General Waiver – Should any injuries occur during or as a result of participation in Grace Art Camp activity parents/guardians agree to indemnify and hold harmless Grace Institute, Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, the Diocese of Oregon and all their employees and volunteers.
Cancellation and Refund Policy – If parents/guardians need to cancel, let us know as soon as possible. A full tuition refund, minus a $30 administration fee, can be made if parents/guardians notify the office by June 11. We are sorry but we cannot make refunds after June 11 or for unattended days.
Emergency Medical Authorization – Parents/guardians give Grace Art Camp permission to seek medical attention, including medical or surgical treatment, for a child in case of an accident or emergency. Parents/guardians agree to provide a reachable contact number, and understand that every effort will be made by Grace Art Camp staff to contact them and/or the emergency contact person in the event of an emergency. This authorization is valid from June 28 through August 13, 2010.
Illness – All campers should enjoy camp, so it is important to not send children if they are ill. If a child becomes ill at Grace Art Camp, parents/guardians understand that Grace Art Camp Staff will call the parent/guardian listed and then the designated emergency contact if one cannot be reached. Children who develop a fever, throw up or present other serious symptoms must go home. (We will try to accommodate a child who misses the entire week due to a serious illness by offering an alternate week if one is available.)
Pick up Authorization – Parents/guardians authorize the designated pick up person to pick up or deliver their child/ren to Grace Art Camp. Parents/guardians understand that if they, or the person named, are unable to pick up my child, they will provide written permission to authorize another adult to pick up their child.
Camp begins each day at 9:00 am and ends each day at 3:00 pm. Children not picked up by 3:10 will be checked into the Extended Hours Program, and charged $10.00 per hour.
Extended Hours – Grace Art Camp offers Extended Hours from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm each day. Cost is $85 per week. If a child is not picked up by 6:00 pm, parents/guardians understand that a late fee accrues at $1.00 per minute.
What about my 12-year-old and Grace Art Camp?
Each year many parents ask if 12-year-olds should attend Grace Art Camp, and Grace Institute recommends that the decision to attend be made by both parent/guardian and child. The camp is designed to accommodate children from age 4 through age 12, with age-appropriate activities offered. For example, preschoolers may complete a fabric collage; older campers may learn more complex embroidery stitches or make constructions using hot glue or sharp tools. Through their participation, older campers also provide good leadership examples for younger children.
We want every camper to have a great experience, and you know your child best. No matter what age, if your child is looking forward to exploring new stories and open to trying new art projects, then Grace Art Camp will be a good match. Children who do not want to participate in Grace Art Camp will most likely struggle.
